Backpacking trips can be quite strenuous. Trails in the Islands may not be up to mainland standards for engineering and maintance. They are often rough and muddy. High elevations and frigid temperatures can be encountered on Haleakala and Mauna Loa. Heat and humidity can be a challenge - you are in the tropics - but the rewards are many.
Service trips give you a chance to get real intimate with the environment. These folks are getting ready to remove exotic plants from a rainforest at risk. Other projects may include trail repair and/or infrastructure improvements in public parks. New service trips to Midway Island and Kahoolawe Island have been developed.
Meals are group affairs. Trip participants take turns assisting in the preparation and serving of meals. The cooks for the Hawaii Subcommittee take pride in presenting meals representative of the wide variety of cultures in the Islands. Local fresh foods are featured - fun for the cooks as well as for the participants!
